I am not interested in debating this topic.
To me, a BLT is perfect. I’ve been told this is off-brand, and I don’t disagree. I don’t really like sandwiches, nor do I care that deeply for bacon (I like it, but I’m more of a sausage girl if I had to pick a breakfast meat). However, something about the combination of juicy, late-summer tomatoes, salty bacon, crisp lettuce, creamy mayo, and hot toasted bread—I simply worship. It is a sandwich in its truest, most honest, and most noble form.
How can so simple a dish exude such culinary excellence? The BLT legitimizes the sandwich genre. It honors and validates the form. The BLT walked so all other sandwiches could run. The flavor profile—sweet, salty, savory—is a tale as old as time.
Not all sandwiches deserve this distinction. I can’t argue against the convenience and portability of the category, but it been sorely abused. Don’t even get me started on the whole “are tacos sandwiches? are burgers?” line of debate. Just because something can fit in between two pieces of handheld carbohydrates unfortunately does not make it a sandwich, nor one worthy of consumption. I love tacos and burgers, respectively—just to be clear.
I could go on, but I’ll spare you. Grab the last of summer’s ripe tomatoes and make a BLT immediately.
